Waukegan Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
What is a snare trap?
Snare traps are made to catch small wild animals like rabbits and squirrels. The main purpose of these kinds of traps is the food collection. These traps are mainly used by commercial hunters and subsistence for the consumption of bushmeat and trade in forest regions of Africa.
Snare trap is one of the easiest and effective traps. They can easily be set in large numbers and can be produced in cheap rate. It is usually made by a wire or a string which should be strong enough and it traps the animal around the body or the neck.
How to make a snare trap:
- The very first step is to choose a noose material and the most effective material for that is wire. You can choose from these wire types – headphone wire, craft wire, stripped wires or an uncoiled spring. In case you are not having wire, you can use cord or string but make sure that it should be strong enough to hold a small animal. You can use shoelaces, fishing line or dental floss as an alternative to wire. If you are not even having these materials then you can use natural tools like milkweed, cattail or dogbane.
- Once you have chosen the material, the next step is to look for the perfect area to set up the trap. It should be placed where there is a probability that animals will pass from that area more than once. It can be near the source of water or food.
- After this, look for a strong young tree. If you can’t find a sapling, you can find a decent sized rock as well.
- Now carve a hook into two sticks. The base should be stronger and longer than the hook. Now plant the base into the ground and make sure that the base is carved so that it can easily get into the ground. The base should be close to the tree.
- Then make a knot and tie it around the bendable young tree or sapling but make sure that it should be strong because the animal will be struggling to get out of it.
- The other end of the cord should be attached to the hook. The cord should be of proper length and the young tree should be able to bend at a ninety-degree angle when the hook is in its right place and when it is removed the sapling should be straight again. After that, a noose should be tied at the bottom of the hook.
- Almost everything is done, you just need arrange the noose and fill it with bait and snare your game. The noose should be this much wide that the target should not miss.
Snare traps are criticized for their cruelty by most of the animal welfare groups. They are also stated as illegal in few jurisdictions such as in Europe but in most of the places they are legal.
